Dr. Smith has also been professionally trained in IV Sedation techniques and has successfully treated thousands of patients since 1985 with this technique. One advantage of this method is that the sedation comes on more quickly and the amount of medication can be adjusted quickly to benefit the patient. If necessary, the medications given through the IV line can be quickly reversed. A disadvantage of this technique is that a small flexible tube must be inserted into a good vein in the arm or hand before the medications can be given. Fearful patients often object to this IV tube placement and prefer to receive medications by mouth as outlined in the previous section.
